Rituals Of Nacirema
Body Ritual Among
the Nacirema
HORACE MINER
This article states that,Professor Linton first brought the ritual of the
Nacirema to the attention of anthropologists twenty
years ago.The people Linton wrote about are a North
American group living in the territory between the
Canadian Cree, the Yaqui and Tarahumare of
Mexico, and the Carib and Arawak of the Antilles
.Nacirema culture is characterized by a highly
developed market economy which has evolved in a
rich natural habitat. While much of the people’s
time is devoted to economic pursuits, a large part of
the fruits of these labors and a considerable portion
of the day are spent in ritual activity. The focus of
this activity is the human body, the appearance and
health of which is a dominant concern in the ethos of the people.
The fundamental belief underlying the whole
system appears to be that the human body is ugly
and that its natural tendency is to debility and disease.
Based on what I read on "The rituals of Nacirema",It relates to Chapter 3 being that these rituals were a custom to Nacirema. In chapter 3 it says,"When we are part of a culture, our way of life seems natural, and we take it as a given".Chapter 3 explores the central role of culture in social life and its pervasive influence on who we are as human beings. It considers some opportunities and challenges posed by our contemporary world,as people of many different cultures. And how to interact with people from cultures other than our own
